Water is used as a cooling and flushing aid when core driling.  Cutting Fluid is an additive which is mixed in the water (which is already being used).

The Cutting Fluid and water mixture assists in the cutting and drilling action. Confirmed 25% increase on core barrel life and reduced loading on the equipment.
